7 Common Dryer Problems and Possible Causes

Oct 14, 2022
A clothes dryer is a vital appliance that makes it easy for you to have clean clothes all the time. The dryer helps you to save time and effort after washing your clothes. However, the clothes dryer may stop working from time to time for several reasons.

Find out the most common clothes dryer issues.

1. Clothes Get Warm But Don't Dry

Your dryer may reach a point where it warms but doesn't completely dry the load. Sometimes, this problem is because you place too many clothes in the dryer. However, if you reduce the weight of the load and the problem persists, there will be another cause. Normally, a faulty heating element may be the reason.

2. Drum Spins but Generates No Heat

You may notice that the drum spins, but the dryer doesn't generate any heat to dry the clothes. Many factors can lead to this unfortunate situation. For example, the dryer's thermal fuse may be broken and damaged. Another possible cause is a dysfunctional temperature switch that fails to set the right temperature. A damaged thermostat and bad heating coils may also cause this problem.

3. Dryer Doesn't Start

The dryer may fail to do anything at all when you press the start button. Usually, the cause may be an unplugged power cord that is not attaching properly to the wall outlet. In some cases, the dryer may fail to start due to a tripped circuit breaker.

If you reset the circuit breaker and the problem persists, the thermal fuse may be the problem. Another possible cause can be a bad terminal block. Moreover, a damaged start switch that doesn't set the correct readings may cause this issue.

4. Dryer Produces Unusual Noises

A dryer that produces grinding and squealing sounds may be having some problems. That problem could be a drum belt that generates the squealing sound due to contact with the drum's exterior. Similarly, problems with the drum support bearing can cause grinding noises.

5. Dryer Doesn't Spin

You may turn on the dryer, and it gets warm but refuses to spin. The first step is to check the settings to confirm that you didn't set the dryer to "dry flat." If the settings are correct, the possible culprits are a broken idler pulley and a damaged belt or motor. The pulley holds the drum in place while the belt increases the drum's speed.

6. Dryer Gets Too Hot

A dryer that records very high temperatures can be hazardous, and you should check it immediately. Normally, a clogged vent could be the cause of the high temperatures. The clogged vent may cause the accumulation of carbon monoxide in your house, leading to overheating. A faulty heating coil or bad thermostat may also cause extreme hotness.

7. Clothes Have Too Many Wrinkles

A few messy lines on a garment are not a cause for alarm. But if all your clothes have crumbled and this happens repeatedly, then the dryer has a problem. Sometimes, the problem is that you did not remove the clothes properly from the dryer. Hence, try to remove one piece of clothing at a time from the dryer to prevent excessive wrinkles.

Your clothes in the dryer can also have many wrinkles if you use the same drying mode for every piece of clothing. Use the correct temperatures for each type of fabric. Call an appliance repair expert to determine the issue if the problem persists.
